Here’s some excellent news: there are no real age limits to teach English abroad. While our courses require you to be at least 18 years old, there is no maximum age limit for someone to finish the course and teach English successfully.
We have trained people of all ages, and many of them have found an excellent career as an ESL/EFL teacher. And with the digitization of the teaching process, it’s not even necessary to leave your home or country.
Can Older Educators Find Good Jobs to Teach English?
Although most of the TEFL course students are in their 20s to early 30s, this doesn’t mean those in that age group are the most suitable candidates for every job. Certain schools and employers are more willing to hire older individuals with more life experience, especially if they have prior working knowledge of the industry.
To note, some positions to teach English are not to teach children, but to teach adults who haven’t had a chance to learn English in their formative years. Older teachers can better connect with those students and may have a firmer grasp on the classroom experience.
What Are the Best Counties for Older Teachers?
While most counties don’t pay heed to the teacher’s age, visa and travel requirements may be different and might include an upper age limit. When choosing where to teach, it’s important to note the job’s challenges and how best to overcome them.

Some regions offer better opportunities to teachers of all ages, such as Latin America, the Middle East, or Southeast Asia. Conversely, consider that you don’t have to travel to teach English abroad in some instances, as more and more classes can be held entirely online and bypass the visa requirements.
How to Get the Best Chance as an Older ESL Teacher?
When looking for potential jobs, always take note of those that conduct interviews in person. These positions are more likely to benefit older teachers, as they put them on a more level playing field.
An in-person interview will demonstrate to a recruiter that the age listed in the passport doesn’t matter as much as your knowledge, health, or drive to teach. On the other hand, if you’ve become acquainted with online classes and technology, you’re more likely to leave a better impression during an internet interview.
Suppose you’re willing to teach English and have the passion for making that a reality, your more mature age is likely to be a benefit rather than a setback. You can learn more about the course here.
